Week 45

November 2015—November 2015

This is a post about weeknotes.

New job

Started at Smallpdf and diving straight in by thinking, sketching and prototyping some animations and UI flows for a specific part of the app. Working closely with their designer is great and is exactly the kind of work I want to be doing.

The office is in a nice part of Kreuzberg, in a big industrial space with other startups with lots of restaurants around.

Topographie des Terrors

In a bid to get out more and experience the city, I visited the "Topography of Terror" exhibition and documentation centre:

The permanent exhibition “Topography of Terror: Gestapo, SS and Reich Security Main Office on Wilhelm- and Prinz-Albrecht-Straße” focuses on the central institutions of the SS and police during the “Third Reich” and the crimes that they committed throughout Europe.

Lots of photography and documents interspersed with quotes from historical figures and more recent historians.

The site and documentation centre itself by Ursula Wilms is sparse as described on their site:

The international design competition … had the express aim of developing an overall concept for the terrain and a new documentation center that would do justice to the historic site’s national and international significance in the heart of the capital, while at the same time avoiding a glorification of this area as the “site of the perpetrators.” The competition objective thus encompassed both a concept for the design of the terrain with all its material traces and also a design for a neutral exhibition building with accompanying scholarly and educational functions.
